The Taranaki Mountain Airs have joined the Wellington Saints in making late import swaps, with Nigerian-born big man Suleiman Braimoh joining the team as a replacement for Gabe Knutson.
Knutson, originally announced as joining guard Adrian Oliver as the imports in Taranaki, is staying with his Slovakian team as they start their semi-final campaign, leaving Braimoh to take his place.
Braimoh comes to Taranaki via Japan, but he has also played in Qatar, where he averaged 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game – and has spent time in the D-League after coming out of Rice University in 2011. A good rebounder but a poor free-throw shooter, he will likely be asked to play centre for the Mountain Airs, starting alongside Aaron Bailey-Nowell in the frontcourt.
A 6’8″, 100kg specimen, he was signed by the franchise in 2013, but his application for a visa was turned down, leaving Taranaki to instead sign Kenny Gabriel. Now, Braimoh is free of any potential complications, and should be available to suit up for their first game of the season against the Manawatu Jets
