The Waikato Pistons have signalled their intentions to be a major force in this year’s National Basketball League competition with the signing of New Zealand Breakers star small forward Thomas Abercrombie.
Abercrombie, a member of the Pistons from 2009 to 2011, is making his NBL return after not playing in the competition for the past few seasons, in order to be in good game shape before the Tall Blacks head off to the World Cup in Spain later this year.
The 6’6″ swingman has been a lights-out shooter this season for the Breakers, hitting the three at a phenomenal 50% rate, and that coupled with his athleticism should make him a legitimate MVP candidate on a strong-looking Pistons squad this season.
His last season with Waikato, in 2011, saw him average 19 points and six rebounds per game, and with his game having improved significantly since then, Pistons fans should be set to see some top-level scoring displays, as well as some trade-mark alley-oops and high-flying blocks.
Abercrombie joins an impressive array of forwards, with the Pistons likely to sport a top-notch frontcourt with Casey Frank and Jack Salt already signed on for the 2014 season. If they can manage to recruit some quality guards with their import slots, then the Pistons will be well in the shot for the playoffs after a low-key season last year.
